No psycho killer, says Cop

Chennai police commissinor R. Sekar on Thursday said that there was no psycho killer in the city. “Three murders in which victims were burnt were commited by a gang of men for petty gain. All other deaths were either accidents for,” he claimed at a press conference.

With the police claiming the breakthrough in the serial murders, residents of Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar can now feel relaxed and heave a sign of relief.

The commissioner noted that there were no seven or right serial killings by a psycho. “We have arrested two normal men, part of a bigger gang, for killing at least two persons – one unidentified man in Kumaran Nagar on july 14 and a watchman named Basha in Ashok nagar on July 16. The murder of another watchman on July 8 also seems to the handiwork of the same gang,” the police said.

The arrested two allegedly admitted that they along with their gang members had killed the people for money to buy drugs and liquor. The other gang members were yet to be nabbed. R Sekar told reporters. The arrested duo Subramani and Nagarajan was part of a bigger group of about eight or nine persons, who ‘would be nabbed soon.

According to the police they had already solved the first two cases of mysterious killings (that took place in the last week of june) by arresting a person identified as Ekambaram who was stated to be mentally unstable. But mysterious killings continued even after the arrest. Because the police arrested a mentally instable person for the first two killing media started terming the subsequent murders as psycho killing’.

The commissioner took a dig at the media and dismissed its portrayal of the murders, as those committed by a ‘psycho’ killer. Skar said there was no psycho angle as feared by people and all deaths happened due to different reasons.

A spate of murders had rocked Vadapalani and nearby areas from last week of June to mid-July, leading to speculation that a ‘psycho’ killer was on the prowl. The victims were found dead under mysterious circumstances with their head smashed with a stone or their body burnt.
