PM seeks Advani’s help

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday sought the help of Leader of the defuse the snowballing Amarneth land transfer crisis and an early end to the violence in Jammu and Kashmir. Mr Advani reportedly told Dr Singh that the BJP’s cooperation was possible only if the overnment started a dialogue with the Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti.

The BJP’s top leaders met Thursday evening to chalk out plans for their nationwide agitation over Amarnath next week, which the party hopes will snowball into “Ayodhya-II.”

An all-party delegation led byhome minister Shivraj Patil will leave for Jammu Saturday to meet the agitation leaders. Mr Patil metexternal affairs minister Parnab Mukherjee Thursday to discuss the various sugestion made at Wednesday’s four-hour allparty meeting.

Scores of people were injured in Jammu and Kashmir Thursday. Pitched battles were fought on the streets of Srinagar, Sopore, Anantnag and Qazigund, while other areas saw a spontaneous shu8tdown. The police fired teargas canisters to break up demonstrations at several places.

Reportsfrom Jammu said the Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti had hardened its strand folling Wednesday’s all-party meeting, as it was angry over the Center’s summary rejection of recently appointed governor N.N.Vohra.

The government, which had initially mishandled the entire issue, has in a damage-control exercise now decided to provide more infrastructure facilities and amenities along both sides of the two yatra routes for pilgrims.
